Abstract
The proposed implementation of mineral based carbon capture technology will lead to large quantities of metal carbonates, especially those containing calcium and magnesium which will be produced in amounts of giga-tonnes per year. The major magnesium carbonate arising is nesquehonite, MgCO3·3H2O, has significant potential for conversion (“curing”) into low density thermal insulation. Replacing other materials such as gypsum, calcium silicate and magnesium oxide and providing a more environmental alternative. This project has successfully studied the conditions needed to bring about this conversion and the properties of the resulting products. The results are helping to optimise the process, leading to scaled up production and making demonstration products.
