Abstract
As part of British Science Week, the Physics student seminar series is back with a webinar on the emerging field of building physics. Andrew Cooper – a practising building physics consultant, will explain what building physics is, its central role in decarbonisation and how it is used both nationally and internationally. A Q&A session will follow that would include questions about career prospects.
The UK is legally committed to net zero carbon by 2050 and around 40% of global carbon emissions come from buildings. We need our existing buildings to be more energy efficient, emit zero carbon and become more resilient if we are to have any hope of achieving this target and avert the worst impacts of climate change.
Building physicists are at the centre of this shift – developing strategies for reducing both operational and embodied carbon. Employed by specialist sustainability practices, property developers and engineering consultancies, there is a huge shortage of qualified building physicists globally.
The event is organised by 3rd-year student, Elliott Halford, and supervised by Dr Theodoros Papadopoulos, University of Chester. It is supported by the IOP Wales branch, the IOP North Wales and Cheshire Centre, and the Faculty of Science and Engineering of the University of Chester. Andrew Cooper is a director at EVORA EDGE, a firm of Technical Asset Managers with a remit covering over £3billion of UK buildings. He has over 25 years of experience as a property and engineering consultant. Specialising in the application of building physics, Andrew is the author of the Building Physics Module for the Energy Institute’s Energy Management Professional qualification(s).
